Just a few thoughts..
A final word on Jeremiah Baskin and Billy Dreher’s departures at Palisade and Fruita Monument. Baskin’s resignation had more to do with differences of opinion than a desire to spend more time with his family. The Daily Sentinel reported that Baskin meet with the school’s administration and the two sides differed in their direction for the program. The reaction from some on social media to Dreher’s contract not being renewed was of shock and anger. Some of the comments indicated an issue with parents about playing time at the varsity, JV and freshman levels led to Dreher’s contract not being renewed. It’s too bad we’re losing two young coaches with passion for what they do. I appreciate the professional manner that both Jeremiah and Billy had in our interactions.
Colorado Mesa’s bats are now backing up the RMAC’s best pitching staff. Bligh Madris is the RMAC’s top hitter after playing in only 9 games last year due to an injury. Former Central Warrior Kyle Serrano and Madris after have helped CMU to second in team batting average, while the Mavs’ arms lead the conference with a 3.35 ERA. Kyle Leahy’s 6-0 start and JR Mcdermott’s return to form have CMU in position once again to win the RMAC.
With the pitch count changes for high school baseball last season, the change to the Southwestern League schedule has been interesting. For example, Fruita Monument and Grand Junction face off twice this week in an effort to protect arms. Tigers coach and former Mav Justin Little loves the change and says it feels more like a college series like they play at CMU. Fruita coach and former Mav Ray McClennan says while the change has been good in some aspects, he misses the schedule being spread out that allowed for more of a SWL title game feel at the end of the season.
Chattahoochie Valley is trying to make it four straight years coming to Grand Junction for the JUCO World Series. We always enjoy Adam Thomas and we also have another reason to root for the Pirates to come back. Freshman Fuzzy Furr has one of the best names ever and would compete with Seminole State’s Bryant Beaver as one of the best names in series history. Thomas says Furr is more than just his clever name. The Chat Valley coach says Furr has the potential to one of the best hitters in the programs history.
One final note: a strong recommendation for Ben Affleck’s The Accountant. Wasn’t sure how to feel about how they would present a character that has Asperger’s Syndrome, but Affleck is great is the role and the movie is a pretty solid action flick. Watched the first episode of ” Brockmire” on IFC. Still prefer the Funny or Die episode that inspired the show, but Hank Aziara is so good in the role I’m going to stick with it.
Catch me on the air weekday mornings from 7-10 AM on The TEAM…
