Let’s get it going…
FIRST DOWN: The Broncos may not have made the “sexy” hire, but bringing in former Chicago defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is what the doctor ordered. At 60, he’s not the young dude from the Sean McVay coaching tree, but a guy that took the Bears from near the bottom of the league to the top defense this season. Denver’s best players are on the defensive side and Fangio will get the most out of the group. What’s almost has exciting is the hiring of former Steeler o-line coach Mike Munchak. Long considered the best line coach in the league, he addresses another major need for the Broncos. So glad Elway decided to let “Ice Pick” Vic make his own hires and not cram Gary Kubiak down his throat. I appreciate what Kubs has done in Denver, but this offense has to move into the 21st century and Kubs isn’t the guy to do that.
SECOND DOWN: AFC and NFC Championship games are Sunday and I’m all in on a geezer Super Bowl. Drew Brees just turned 40 and facing 41 year old Tom Brady will be a lot of fun in Atlanta. Mahomes and Goff will get their chance, make way for the old dudes! My picks: went 2-2 last week. Patriots beat Chiefs 35-28 and Saints knock off Rams 28-24. Catch both games Sunday on The TEAM Sports Network.
THIRD DOWN: Make it 11 in a row for the Colorado Mesa women’s basketball team. The Mavs sweep road wins at Highlands and CSU-Pueblo. Former Grand Valley standout Kylyn Rigsby had a big weekend, dropping in 21 at Pueblo. The CMU men are no slouches at 6-3 in the RMAC. Too many turnovers (22) against Highlands hurt them, but they bounced back for a nice win Saturday at Pueblo. The Mavs lose some offense off the bench with Kolton Peterson’s injury. The stress fracture will keep out for at least six weeks. Both teams play at Adams State and Ft. Lewis. Coverage both nights on The TEAM/CMU Sports Network at 5:15 PM
FOURTH DOWN: Congrats to this year’s Fruita Monument Hall of Fame inductees! Dave Fox coaches the Wildcats to a girls state basketball title and a state baseball title, Richard Johnson won a state singles title and a NCAA tennis championship at Pepperdine, Jim Brenneman played in the JUCO World series for Mesa and played for the New York Yankees, Eldon Miller also played in JUCO for the Mavericks, Jack Flache won a national wrestling title at Northern Colorado and the late Silva brothers: Archie and Amadeo, were state champion wrestlers. The 1970 state championship baseball team will also be inducted. Congrats to my cousin Jack Paris, who was on that team! The ceremony takes place during half-time of the Fruita Monument and Grand Junction girls basketball game this Friday.
