Just a few thoughts:
The Colorado Mesa football team is off to a 3-0 start for the second time in head coach Russ Martin’s tenure at CMU. The Mavs are 3rd in scoring offense and scoring defense despite giving up over 500 yards of total offense to Chadron State and Mines. The CMU backfield of Salum and Tann might be the best one in the RMAC. The Mavs have Ft. Lewis on Saturday and you have to hope they don’t look past the Skyhawks to CSU-Pueblo on the 30th. Last year, CMU had to score 17 points in the fourth quarter at Ft. Lewis. I don’t think that will be the case again. Catch the game Saturday night with pregame at 6 PM and kick-off at 7 PM on The TEAM Sports Network.
Fruita Monument is 4-0 on the gridiron and the defense has been the difference. Defensive coordinator Andrew Decker has moved linebacker Delson Pyland to nose guard, where his quickness has disrupted opposing offensive lines. The Wildcats once again lead the 4A ranks in rushing with Braden Graham and Treyton Queen, but the Wildcat defense might be the key to a deep 4A playoff run. Fruita sits second behind Pine Creek in RPI in 4A.
Congrats to the Wildcats’ Riley Snyder. She recorded her 1,000 kill in volleyball after reaching the 1,000 point mark in basketball last season. Nice to see a multi-sport athlete have that kind of success in two sports. Snyder will play basketball at Air Force.
The Rockies’ offense has disappeared at the worst possible time. As they start a four game set in San Diego, Trevor Story, Mary Reynolds and others need to help Arenado, Blackmon and now Jonathan Lucroy. The pitching has been good enough, but the Colorado offense has to start showing up with Milwaukee breathing down their necks.
Will the excitement of a win over the Cowboys lead to a hang-over Sunday in Buffalo? The Broncos dominated Dallas on both sides of the ball as Trevor Siemian and CJ Anderson are off to fast starts. The Broncos aren’t forgetting a 4-0 start in 2016 that led to 9-7 and missing the playoffs. Mike McCoy and Bill Musgrave have made the difference in elevating Siemian’s play. Denver has historically not played well in early games and the Bills are in the top ten in defense. But so is Denver’s defense and their ability to force turnovers will lead them to a 3-0 start.
One final note. The TEAM is now on in Delta at 102.1. We’re excited about reaching sports fans in Delta County!
