Just a few thoughts…
Congrats to Ryan Hayden and Josh King on their new jobs. Hayden is the new boys coach at Fruita Monument, replacing Billy Dreher. He took over a Central team that had to go though an 0-24 start for Hayden. He turned that into a 56-61 record and back to back 5A state tournament appearances. Hayden is a good X and O’s guy that develops strong relationships with his players. He’ll have a good piece to work around in 6’6 Trey Morrill. King is Central’s new head coach was Hayden’s assistant and has a strong connection with the Warrior players as a math teacher and coach. He coached the Central freshman team the last two years. King loses Hunter Kelchner, Kyle Blair, Julio Galindo and others to graduation, but has a JV team that went undefeated against the valley last season.
Speaking of Morrill, the junior tossed a perfect five inning game in Fruita Monument’s 10-0 run rule win over Montrose. He did everything but drive the bus to the field as he added a two triples. The Wildcats’ undefeated SWL record has them in position to repeat at champions.
CMU baseball finds out next week where they rank in the South Central region rankings. They have a commanding lead in the RMAC as they head to last place Adams State. Chris Hanks might have the best pitching staff he’s ever had as the Mavs skipper.
The Broncos open at home for the seven concecutive season when they play the LA (weird to write) Chargers at Mile High on September 11th for Monday Night Football. It shows that even after a 9-7 season, the Broncos still have the primetime power in what will be the regular season debut of Vance Joseph as head coach. With the draft coming up, what do the Broncos do with the 20th pick? Does the Duke of Denver trade out of the first round, roll the dice on Bolles for the offensive line or make Broncos Country happy with another McCaffery in a Broncos uni? I have a feeling that even with a poor tackle class, Elway takes Garrett Bolles out of Utah. Just a hunch..
