Just a Few Thoughts from Jim D…
USA, USA! Congrats to the US on winning the World Baseball Classic for the first time. Maybe its me being a bandwagon Merica, I loved watching the WBC! Wish Nolan Arenado would have had a better WBC, but it did make me appreciate the Giants’ Brandon Crawford. He’s a guy that often gets overlooked on the Giants roster, but had a great WBC series. I didn’t like Ian Kinsler’s shot at the DR and Puerto Rico about how they display their emotion. The Latin American players love the game and baseball needs that kind of passion to bring in the next generation of fans.
We thought Emmanuel Mudiay was going to be the future star of the Denver Nuggets and, boy we were wrong! Nikola Jokic has become the face of the franchise, Gary Harris has become consistent scorer and defender and Jamal Murray has become the future at the point. Maybe its too great of expectations or perhaps Denver overvalued Mudiay, but it looks like his time in Denver is coming to an end.
Congrats to our local high school basketball players. Fruita Monument’s Riley Snyder was named to the CHSAA 5A honorable mention team after leading the Wildcats to the SWL title for a second straight year. Rifle’s Samantha Hinkle and Elly Walters were honorable mention in 4A after leading the Bears to the WSL title and the Elite Eight. Palisade’s Daniel McLean was an honorable mention 4A player. Grand Junction’s Drew Derrieux caps off a great senior season with a selection to the Colorado High School Coaches Association All-State game. The game is June 9th in Alamosa.
Colorado Mesa begins the second part of their spring football practice on Monday. Mavs coach Russ Martin says that quarterback Eystin Salum is making the adjustment to being the starter this spring. Salum played in 9 games last year while splitting time with Sean Rubalcaba. Martin says a rash of injuries will keep a number of players out during the spring. Linebacker Tom Sager isn’t ready to come back yet after missing all of last year with a foot injury.
